The Basics
Using Your Flipboard.
Your Flipboard begins with a beautiful cover. Swipe to flip open the cover. If you have an Account, simply sign in. If you don’t, select some topics of interest to create your Flipboard.
Tap on a section and flip through it. Tap an article to read it. Flip through articles.
Add Your Favorite Content.
Tap the red ribbon to open the Content Guide to discover great content to add or type your favorite source or topic in the search bar to find content you want.
For example open the Content Guide, then the Travel category, and tap National Geographic to open their beautiful section. Flip through the section and tap to read articles. If you want to add Nat Geo to your Flipboard, just tap the “+Add” button.
Add a Social Network.
Open the Content Guide and go to Accounts. Select a social network, login, and it will be added to your Flipboard as a beautiful section to read showing all the great content being shared with you.
The sharing tools for that social network will be available to you as well. When reading an article, tap the social bar at the bottom of the page to access options to comment, share, like, favorite, and much more.
Create a Flipboard Account.
With Flipboard Accounts you can access your Flipboard on any shared iPad and iPhone. When you sign in, you’ll have all of your favorite sections instantly available.
Creating a Flipboard Account also gives you access to All Timelines, a single section containing all the articles and photos being shared across all your social networks.
To create an account, just tap “Flipboard Account” on the upper left of your main Flipboard page. This will allow you to Create an account or Sign In to an existing account. Tap Create and fill in the required fields.
For help with your account, go to Sign In, then “Need Help?” for help with your password, user name, and more. If you’re already logged in, open your account, tap “Edit Account” and “More Settings…” to access your account settings.
Refresh Your Flipboard.
There is a manual refresh button in the lower left corner of your Flipboard. Anytime you want your feeds to update, just tap the refresh button. Flipboard also automatically refreshes periodically as new content comes in.
How to Close an Article.
There are four different ways to easily close an article: two finger tap, double tap, pinch, and the close button. These gestures make for a very handy way of quickly navigating Flipboard.
Find More Options in Settings.
Tap the gear icon in the lower right corner of your Flipboard to open Settings. There you will find settings for your social network accounts. You can manage your “Muted Authors” list here and, best of all, you can set up “Read Later” options for using Instapaper and ReadItLater to save articles.
Save Articles with ReadItLater and Instapaper.
Save articles for later using ReadItLater or Instapaper. Setting up an account is easy and free.
Once you have created an account, tap the gear icon in the lower right of your Flipboard to open Settings. Select “Read Later” and choose the service to log in to. Now, when you open an article, tap the share button, you will see the option to Read Later.
Adjust the Font Size to Your Liking.
Tap the gear icon in the lower right corner of your Flipboard to open Settings. Tap “Text Size” to adjust the font size.
Flag Inappropriate.
If you should ever see inappropriate content on Flipboard, you can tap and hold the item, then select “Flag Inappropriate” – this will immediately remove the unwanted image from your Flipboard. It will also report it to us for removal.
Social Networks & Features
Connect to Your Social Accounts on Flipboard.
Open the Content Guide, select Accounts to connect to any of the popular social networks right on your Flipboard. Select your favorite feed, log in, and it’s instantly added to your Flipboard.
Create Tweets or Update Your Facebook Status Right From Flipboard.
Just tap the compose button in the lower right corner and you can create posts for any of the social networks you are using with Flipboard. Tap your name to select the network you want your message to go to.
You can also attach files and shorten links in your messages, tap the paper clip to attached and tap the gear icon to shorten links. Try it out and share from Flipboard.
Follow People and See Their Profiles in Flipboard.
Did you find someone you’d like to follow? Right from their post you can tap on the person’s name or avatar to follow them, view their profile and more.
You Can Mute Authors.
If someone’s being too noisy in your Flipboard, for example, you can Mute Authors. Just open a post, tap on their name in the lower left, then choose “Mute…” Posts from this person or source will no longer display in your Flipboard.
Tap the gear icon in the lower right of your Flipboard to manage Muted Authors.
Share Any Flipboard Page.
When composing a message, tap the paperclip icon, and select “Current Page.” Tap your name to select the network you want, add some text, and post. This is great way to share your Flipboard experience on all your social networks.
Discover Great Content
Use Search to Find More Great Content.
Open the Content Guide and tap the search bar. Type in any person, blog or topic, you’ll get results from across the social web. Then tap on the results to browse anything from related Twitter lists to Instagram photos.
Search is a very useful tool to expand the content on your Flipboard to better suit your personal preferences. Fill Flipboard with the content most important to you.
Discover Great RSS Feeds.
You can use the Google Reader service to access RSS and then read and interact with your feeds right in Flipboard. You can also use the Search feature to find any RSS feed by name, website URL, or RSS link.
Your Twitter Favorites Can Be a Section.
Open the Content Guide, tap Accounts, select Twitter, then tap Your Favorites. This will show you all the tweets you have marked as Favorite. Tap +Add.
Create Your Own Sections with Twitter Lists.
To create and maintain a Twitter list, visit your account on twitter.com.
Once you have created your list, you can add it to your Flipboard. Just open the Content Guide and use the search bar to find it by name. To find it directly, search for “@Name/List_Name”
Discover More Social Network Features.
From the Accounts tab in the Content Guide you can quickly browse more from your social feeds. Browse photos of you, @mentions, and List your follow, Groups, Pages and more. (You can also do this when reading any social account by tapping on the Header for the section, for example tap “Facebook” to see other ways to view your feed)
Facebook Photos-Only Feed.
Open the Content Guide, tap Accounts, select Facebook, tap “News Feed Photos.” This will show you just the photos posted to your news feed. Tap +Add to add to your Flipboard.
Flip Through Your LinkedIN Groups.
You can follow LinkedIN Groups, a way to quickly discover the most popular discussions in your professional groups. Open the Content Guide, tap Accounts, tap LinkedIN, select Groups. Tap +Add to add to your Flipboard.
Google Reader & RSS
Discover Great RSS Feeds.
You can use the Google Reader service to access RSS and then read and interact with your feeds right in Flipboard. You can also use the Search feature to find any RSS feed by name, website URL, or RSS link.
Google Reader: Set Read / Unread Options.
Go to Settings by tapping the gear icon in the lower right corner of your Flipboard. Under My Accounts, tap on Google Reader. You’ll be able to turn on things like indicate unread items, show only unread items, and mark whole page read after flip. Read articles will display with gray headlines.
Google Reader Folders at Your Fingertips.
Open the Content Guide, tap on Accounts in the left column, and select Google Reader. You’ll see All Items, Your Shared Items, Your Starred Items, People You Follow, and Feeds & Folders. Tap on Feeds & Folders to see the full list of individual feeds you follow and folder you have created in Google Reader.
Google Reader: Mark All Read in One Swipe.
Open your Google Reader section and tap the masthead. Swipe left or right on All Items. Tap the “Mark All Read” button. You can also do this for individual Feeds & Folders.
More Google Reader Options.
Tap the settings gear on your Flipboard, select Google Reader, and you will see the options for “Indicate Unread Items,” “Mark Page Read after Flip,” and “Show Only Unread.”
To view unread counts, open the Content Guide, tap Accounts, then Google Reader and “Feeds & Folders.” Unread counts are displayed next to your feeds and folders. You can even swipe on the row with the unread count to reveal a “Mark All Read” button.
